One thing kept pinballing through my brain on the Lyft ride back to Dogtown: Was Dickie trying to set me up somehow? I didn’t buy that whole “missing” business, not for a second. He was probably holed up at a friend’s house or something and left that little cell phone clue in hopes of keeping the cops off his trail, maybe even get me arrested. I was also more than a little concerned that Ainsley’s favor to Dickie’s mom might extend to letting her son slide on a murder rap, especially if there was a dopey lifestyle blogger to take the fall.

And there was also the concern that he might show up at my house again that night.

The Lyft driver pulled up to the curb across the street from Dogtown and I got out, sending him on his way with a decent tip via the app on my phone. A couple of older fellas were seated at a table on the sidewalk, but I didn’t see any of the regulars. I also didn’t see Danger Potato, and a little lightning bolt of fear shot down my spine – you know, the one that had melted down into my shoes earlier. I anxiously waited for a couple cars to pass, then ran across the street to the cafe and yanked the door open.

Inge looked up from a table where she was delivering a sandwich to a woman who looked like she might be a TV newscaster, plastic blonde hair in perfect curls around her shoulders. “Hey, Leave On! I’ll be right there,” Inge said.

I stepped inside and let the door close behind me as I scanned the room for the Potato. The little dog was nowhere to be seen and worry was welling up inside of me.

After a moment, Inge headed for the counter, gesturing for me to follow. As I reached the counter, Inge pointed over it. There on the floor lay Danger Potato in a little pile of towels, completely conked out.

“She was a total lunatic for about forty minutes after the cops took you away,” Inge said. “Then she nestled into those towels and she’s been asleep ever since.”

“Thank you for taking care of her.” The instant I started talking, Danger Potato’s head snapped up and she scurried around the counter and ran towards me – and you guessed it, the waterworks were flowing the whole way. “I’m sorry! I’ll clean it up!” Trying to shake off the look of horror on Inge’s face, I crouched to greet the Potato, giving her plenty of good skritchins.

Inge quickly retrieved the cleaning supplies and brought them to me, offering an apology to the plastic-haired woman. Plastic-hair looked like the Potato had peed in her sandwich instead of on the floor across the room, but she waved it off with a practiced – and very phony – smile.

As I began cleaning up Danger Potato’s enthusiastic mess, Inge hunkered down next to me. “So what was up with those cops?” she whispered. “Was it about Lucrezia?”

“Sort of.
